The way food arrives at the table at Magpie has been subject to much discussion from day one, but there was no trolley in sight on a late Sunday lunchtime - this is reserved for the evenings. Dish after dish of exquisite food arrived at the table timed to perfection. It's hard to pick a favourite, but monkfish (pictured) and fried chicken 'coq au vin were particular highlights (the latter so good we ordered a second). With an excellent CODE app offer Sunday - Tuesday there's no excuse not to settle in with a carafe of wine and work your way down the list.
The Dumbwaiter headed to Claridge's on Monday evening for the launch of their first ever cookbook. The Mayfair hotel always does everything with such class and style - Dom Perignon in the hotel's kitchens followed by a three-course dinner and the finest Burgundy. With the Michelin announcements on Monday it seemed only fitting that The Dumbwaiter should head Texture, which first gained a Michelin star back in 2010. Celebrating its 10th year, Aggi Sverrisson continues to offer up a taste of the less ubiquitous Scandinavian cuisine (Icelandic). The Dumbwaiter enjoyed Scottish salmon followed by Icelandic salt cod (pictured).
Bahraini cuisine is a new one for The Dumbwaiter so he was delighted to head to Chelsea’s Elystan Street to try the newly opened Villa Mama’s. The restaurant is a direct import from Bahrain - where chef-restauranteur Roaya Saleh also runs the original site - and the authenticity shows. The Dumbwaiter particularly enjoyed kaskhe bademjoon (something like a silky aubergine explosion) and a beautiful um ali for dessert alongside some Lebanese wines. The ambience and the service were particularly charming.
Clerkenwell favourite Breddos Tacos is coming to Soho, which is great news for anyone who still hasn’t quite figured out how exactly to get to the original. The Dumbwaiter popped in for a sneak preview of the new site, enjoying Baja fish tacos (pictured), Lemon sole milanese and Elote – which turned out to be probably the best corn The Dumbwaiter has ever tasted. Judging by the number of walk-ins being turned away with the restaurant not technically open, it’s not going to be long before queues start to form down the street.
