The Dumbwaiter's Best Bites of the Week

Kettner’s Townhouse

The Dumbwaiter was always a fan of Kettner’s in Soho but can't deny it had fallen off his radar a while back. The Romilly Street establishment is now back open under the ownership of Soho House & Co after a refurbishment that included the addition of 32 bedrooms. The Champagne bar, piano bar and dining room have to be some of the most beautiful spaces in Soho. The restaurant has a French theme – crudites and cote de boeuf were the order of the night - and reminded The Dumbwaiter a little of Dean Street Townhouse.

Sticks'n'sushi Victoria

Ever since they opened their first London restaurant in Wimbledon, The Dumbwaiter has been a fan of Danish import Sticks’n’Sushi. The Japanese restaurant nicely slots in between grab and go sushi and the more high end establishments in London. Lazy Susan invited The Dumbwaiter for dinner at the newest Sticks’n’Sushi at Nova in Victoria. They enjoyed a variety of, yes you guessed it, sticks (yakitori) and sushi.

Over Under Soho

The recently opened Over Under in Ham Yard in Soho is not only a decent spot for a coffee but they have a great food menu too. Running in between meetings on Wednesday, The Dumbwaiter tucked into a very healthy kale salad and a flat white. And good news for hospitality folk on the CODE app, both Over Under in Soho and Earl’s Court now do a special industry offer.

The Dumbwaiter has always been partial to a good gin and tonic, so the opportunity to enjoy a dinner at Indian stalwart Benares alongside gin pairings from East India Company Gin seemed too good to miss. From ‘Ginger Sparklers’ to a ‘Gin Sour Twist’, there was no shortage of aromatics to hold their own against the spices of the subcontinent. The highlight was a beautifully cooked piece of sea bream, in a coconut and kokum sauce with plenty of lentils, tandoori bread and rice to go around.

Holborn Dining Room

Last Saturday was drizzly and miserable affair, but thankfully The Dumbwaiter had plans for a long lunch in the elegant environs of the Holborn Dining Room. In the hands of their most hospitable front of house team, he worked his way through a crisp chicken salad before the juicy shrimp burger (and a bite or two of Lazy Susan’s curried mutton pie). Quite full, The Dumbwaiter managed to squeeze in a slice of chocolate tart before heading out into the approaching dusk.
