City Road by Old Street Roundabout is a funny old spot but two new restaurants have opened up there and both seem to be heaving every night. Next door to Nuala is Passo, a swanky LA-influenced Italian from the boys behind Rum Kitchen and Foleys. The Dumbwaiter enjoyed a brilliant bowl of tagliatelle with black truffle last Friday night.
Japanese food is one of The Dumbwaiter’s favourite cuisines and he was lucky enough to have lunch at the two Michelin star Umu in Mayfair this week. Chef Yoshinori-san’s selection of sashimi included the most delicate turbot and toro.
It’s been a while since The Dumbwaiter had eaten at Clipstone, the neighbourhood restaurant from Will Lander and Daniel Morgenthau. The menu has changed moved from sharing plates to a more standard a la carte, as well as a cracking set lunch menu with 2 courses for £22. The highlight of yesterday’s lunch was the celeriac cappelletti with artichokes.
On a Friday night after a long week of work, The Dumbwaiter could think of nothing better than settling in at The Drapers Arms, with a menu in one hand and a negroni in the other. After a salad of bitter leaves, ricotta, blood orange and almonds, The Dumbwaiter tucked in to the hearty (but perhaps not heart-friendly) suet crust lamb pie alongside a lovely glass of red.
The Dumbwaiter was treated to a feast at Smith & Wollensky this week. Chef Tom Cook put the whole cow to good use with 11 dishes from the same carcass. The highlight was the fillet medallions, cooked 3 different ways with 3 different sauces.
