There's been a number of new communal workspaces opening up across London over the past few years and there's a new one in Fitzrovia. Mortimer House has been designed by AvroKO Hospitality and reminded The Dumbwaiter of Chiltern Firehouse. The office and gym space is for members only but the restaurant, Mortimer House Kitchen is open to the public. The menu had a combination of Middle Eastern inspired dishes along with some Italian classics such as this Buffalo ricotta ravioli with black winter truffle.
The Dumbwaiter visited Birmingham for the day this week and was treated to some first class hospitality. After some drinks at Smultronstalle - possibly one of the best bars The Dumbwaiter has ever been to - he had some dinner at Salt & Earth. Dishes included yucca fries and ponzu mayonnaise, Japanese style fried chicken with dirty 1000 island and beef rump cap with hibiscus mole sauce.
Lazy Susan found herself surrounded by couples swooning over the 10-course tasting menu at Native this Valentines. She especially enjoyed truffle potato risotto with tamari and confit garlic paste as well as the bone marrow and white chocolate truffle. Interesting choices on the wine list including an Austrian wine which, despite having no grape variety listed, slipped down all too easily.
Despite its relatively central setting, the stretch between Vauxhall and Stockwell is somewhat of a culinary black hole (with the exception of Brunswick House and Little Portugal). Finding himself with a rare free evening The Dumbwaiter headed to South Lambeth Road’s newest addition, Stockwell Continental, from the team behind Waterloo’s Anchor and Hope and Lambeth’s Canton Arms. The Dumbwaiter enjoyed Nduja pizza from the bright yellow pizza oven which is highly reminiscent of the iconic shocking pink eqiuvalent at The River Cafe
