The Dumbwaiter's Best Bites of the Week

What better than a quick mid-week lunch at Pastaio with friends to bring some festive cheer? The Dumbwaiter treated himself to ravioli filled with mozzarella with Bolognese ragu. To finish he poured a shot of espresso over a scoop of strachiatella to make a knock-off affogato. Glorious.

Honey & Smoke

Nursing a sore head after the office Christmas party, Lazy Susan was delighted to be treated to breakfast by her friends at Karma Cola at Honey and Smoke in Fitzrovia. Beginning with thick, creamy hummus accompanied by charred flatbreads, Lazy Susan then moved on to an aubergine sabich with tahini and a poached egg. All covered with fiery red chillies in oil; just what the doctor ordered.

The Dumbwaiter had always been curious to try Perilla, so was delighted to finally visit this week. Nestled on the corner of Newington Green, the restaurant is sending out a selection of brilliant dishes such as French onion soup served within an onion (pictured) and roast hake served with moules mariniere sauce. Strong, confident cooking – this place is a gem and the co-founders inclusion in this years CODE Hospitality 30 Under 30 is well-deserved.

East London Liquor Company

On Tuesday evening Lazy Susan took a deep-dive into the world of small-batch mezcal producers with a special tasting at the East London Liquor Company. Marcis Dzelzainis was on hand to introduce El Destilado, the new spirit brand that he, Alex Wolpert and Michael Sager have launched, which brings a winemaker’s approach to Mexican distillates. As a newcomer to mezcal, Lazy Susan was surprised to explore the huge diversity from different terroirs and agave cultivars but it was the rum – Aguardiente de Cana – with notes of fresh banana bread that Lazy Susan loved best.

Canopy Market

The Dumbwaiter hadn’t been to the Christmas Canopy Market at King’s Cross before, but what better way to catch those festive feels than with an evening of mulled wine, great food and Christmas cheer. With independent pop-ups, live music and an array of food vendors, the Dumbwaiter was spoilt for choice. Both Cheeky Burger and Bap Foods were a highlight, along with the chance to nab some unique Christmas gifts for Lazy Susan!
