The delicate, innovative cooking of chef Elizabeth Haigh is currently available in the rather chic setting of Mortimer House and it’s well worth booking in. Lazy Susan loved everything on the Kaizen House menu from the padron peppers with yuzu mayo right through to kaya caramel toast-flavoured ice cream but in a crowded field of katsu sandos across London, Haigh’s melt-in-the-mouth buttermilk fried chicken and caviar version is a definite winner.
The Dumbwaiter braved the horror of the Central Line at lunchtime this week to head over to Fatt Punditt on Berwick Street. With food that incorporates Chinese cooking techniques with Indian spices, The Dumbwaiter had everything from Momos (the kid goat version was especially good) to delicious szechuan-spiked Bombay Chilly Prawns. After ending the meal by swiftly polishing off the Sizzling Brownie, The Dumbwaiter & Co did, admittedly, find it a little difficult to go back to the office.
Tuna and Sake Masterclass at Yen
Tuna and Sake - two things that the majority of us have at some point almost certainly feigned to know more about than we actually do - were the focus of Wednesday evening courtesy of the team at Yen. Kicking off with a crash course in Tuna butchery from Chef Yasuda, who swears by Spanish farmed tuna as being some of the best in the world, The Dumbwaiter can now attempt to tell the difference between Akami (lean tuna) Chutoro (fatty tuna) and Ohtoro (fattier still). 5 courses followed with a sake flight (hot, cold and surprisingly a sparkling number), lead by expert Sachiko Koyama and all sourced from Tedorigawa brewery, one of Japan's finest Sake producers.
Jason Atherton is going to have a busy summer this year and he's kicked it off by launching No. 5 Social in the space that used to be Little Social opposite the Mayfair mothership, Pollen Street Social. The Dumbwaiter very much enjoyed his dinner there, with dishes including lobster with artichoke and hazelnut followed by a Josper grilled Iberico pork chop cooked by head chef Kostas Papathanasiou.#
Lazy Susan would never start the day with a pint… but her date did when she had breakfast at the Guinea Grill in Mayfair the other morning. It’s a new and very welcome venture for the historic pub. From a gloriously diverse menu – everything from porridge to prawn cocktail – she chose calves liver with tomato, bacon and eggs. The liver was tender and delicious, and a side order of bubble and squeak went down a treat too, although the bangers went into a doggy bag for later - even a dedicated eater has their limits…
It was off to the home of cricket on Thursday evening for the Dumbwaiter, to have dinner cooked by Tommy Banks in the Long Room of the Lord's pavilion. The chef patron of The Black Swan and Roots in Yorkshire served some of his signature dishes to the room, including the infamous Crapaudine beetroot cooked slowly in beef fat.
