It doesn’t seem possible that we won’t see Fay Maschler’s review of London’s restaurants each Wednesday in the Evening Standard but, after 48 years, she is giving up her weekly beat. Everyone at CODE joins the many voices in hospitality in congratulating Fay on her marvellous achievements over many years.
Having witnessed Fay in action when she reviews, it’s fair to say that chefs and restaurateurs watch her arrival with great trepidation, but she has been a terrific champion of the industry too. Very swiftly after the announcement that she would be moving on to a contributor role at the Evening Standard came the news that Fay Maschler is to be the new restaurant critic at The Tatler. Longer lead times will be a challenge after the practice of being first through the door of a new restaurant and the review appearing within a week, but we look forward to seeing her new column.
Meanwhile, huge congratulations to Jimi Famurewa who takes over as chief restaurant critic for the Evening Standard. He’ll appear in both the main paper and ES magazine and has already become a familiar face thanks to his appearances as a Masterchef judge. We look forward to seeing where he chooses for his first newsprint review.
