NORTHERN ROOTS

Mary-Ellen McTague has joined Northern Roots, a 160-acre urban farm and eco-park on a former landfill site in Oldham, as its new chef partner ahead of its launch as a visitor destination in autumn 2026. McTague, co-founder of EatWellMCR and a longtime advocate for sustainable food systems, will lead the café and catering operation, overseeing menu development and supporting recruitment. She says: “Northern Roots represents something incredibly exciting. There are very few places in the UK attempting to bring together urban farming, nature recovery, community wellbeing and food production at this scale.” McTague continues in her role as chef consultant at Pip at Treehouse Hotel Manchester.

LE CAFÉ LPM

London is to get a first look at Le Café LPM, the new Riviera-inspired café concept by La Petite Maison, when it debuts at The Lanesborough this September. The concept will be in residence at the hotel for one year before opening permanently in Dubai.

GOLDIES

Liverpool hospitality group, Roadtrip Hospitality, opens its fifth location this week: a standalone site for its NY-style pizza brand, Goldies. It takes over the old Brewdog site on Liverpool’s Colquitt Street. Next up, a second site for PINS Social Club, in Manchester, in early 2027.

BILL POON

Bill Poon, the chef and restaurateur whose restaurant Poon’s of Covent Garden was one of the first Chinese restaurants in the UK to win a Michelin star, has died aged 81. Our thoughts are with his friends and family. His daughter Amy continues his legacy at Poon’s at Somerset House.

• Fancy dinner on The Clove Club?  ‘Young Bloods’ is a new monthly initiative offering a complimentary table for four at the two-Michelin-star restaurant to young hospo professionals under the age of 23. Here’s how to apply.

• Wild Wine Fair returns to Timberyard in Edinburgh on 26 July, with 17 wine suppliers and a smash burger and donut pop-up from Manchester’s Higher Ground. Tickets, £6.

• At All My Friends in Hackney Wick for one month only from 14 July: the ‘A1 Beef Drip Pizza’ with beef shin, pickled mustard greens and mala chilli dust – Dough Hands’ tribute to Mondo To Go’s ‘A1 Beef Drip Sandwich’.

• Former Cadet head chef Jamie Smart is heading to Kilchoan Estate by Dunton on the Knoydart Peninsula, to lead the culinary programme. The remote estate in Western Scotland is accessible by foot or by boat only.

• Jonny Bone, head chef at Core by Clare Smyth is leaving after close to a decade at the three-Michelin-star restaurant. He has not yet announced his next move.

• London has lost two long-standing institutions: Zafferano has closed after 31 years in Belgravia; Le Vacherin in Chiswick after 24 years.

• Adam Byatt has appointed Will Bee (ex-Lita and Paul Ainsworth at No.6) as head chef at Rosina, his new Italian restaurant opening in Wandsworth today.

• Mango mania! Cameron and Missy Malik-Flynn’s Mango Listening Bar is back, taking over All Projects Limited in Haggerston from 11–12 July with talks, tastings, music and cocktails. 50% of F&B profits to The Amos Trust.

The Fat Badger remains West London’s premier celeb spot. Lily Allen, Taron Egerton and Dan Levy were all in on one night last week.

The secret to Coqodaq’s famous chicken nuggets? The seasoned flour, apparently, which the Coqodaq team had the fun job of getting through airport security for their pop-up at Lucky Cat in Mayfair which runs until the end of the week.
