Luminary Bakery is an award-winning bakery empowering women who have faced social and economic disadvantage. Producing beautiful baked goods, wedding and celebration cakes, artisan coffee, Letterbox Brownies and much more – Luminary is designed to offer opportunities for women to build a future for themselves. Luminary has been featured in Vogue, Waitrose, Vanity Fair, The Evening Standard and more, and are lucky to count Stella McCartney, ASOS, Microsoft and many others as clients.

By investing in and releasing women to realise their dreams, through training, employment and community – we aim to break cycles of poverty, violence & disadvantage once and for all.

We have two cafes at present, based in Camden and Stoke Newington, and we have big ambitions to open more, employ more women and become a well-known bakery brand across the UK. We’d love you to consider joining us on this journey!

We are on the look out for a Head Baker to run a bakery kitchen and manage a small team of bakers – including graduates of the Luminary training programme – to produce the whole Luminary range of artisan baked goods, from beautiful artisan wedding and celebration cakes to our famous Letterbox Brownies, ensuring quality, consistency and efficiency at all times.

    KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Overseeing a team of bakers to successfully produce and fulfil bakery orders across all business sales channels (corporate orders, café baked goods, consumer orders via the Luminary e- commerce store, wedding and celebration cakes).
    • Ensuring the quality and excellence of all Luminary baked goods created on site, including brand consistency, product quality and food standards.
    • Managing the bakery team to successfully ice and decorate wedding and celebration cakes, baking and preparing event or bespoke orders and batch-baking traybakes, layer cakes and cookies, amongst other products.
    • Oversight of bakery department planning and administration; including ordering packaging in advance for postal orders, liaising with suppliers, ordering ingredients and scheduling team shifts.
    • New product development: including recipe creation for press and partners (most recently this has included opportunities with Waitrose and Ben & Jerry’s), as well as developing innovative new product ideas and strategies for in-house products
Maintaining food hygiene and safety standards as per company policy and ensuring that the bakery team follow correct processes and procedures and have appropriate levels of training.
    • Working with the Commercial Director and Head of Finance to oversee the commercial viability and performance of the bakery department; including cost of sales analysis, supplier management, regular stock takes, and responsibility for managing the profit and loss of the department.
    • Leadership and line management responsibilities across the bakery team, including overseeing work experience and apprentice opportunities and management of full-time and part-time team members.
    • Line Management will include supervision and one-to-ones with women who are on, or have graduated from, the Luminary programme, whether gaining work experience, employed as apprentices, or in their first employment role, who have experienced gender-based violence and disadvantage, working to develop their confidence and skills in a workplace environment. (For this reason it is a Genuine Occupational Requirement that the post holder is female, permitted under
Schedule 9, part 1 of the Equality Act 2010.)
    • Any other tasks that the Commercial Director and Head Office may require.
