Chef Leandro Carreira to launch Claro in Soho

Published 17 February 2020

Big news for Soho: celebrated chef Leandro Carreira is to launch new restaurant Claro in Spring. Carreira is teaming up with Alex Hunter, founder of The Sea, The Sea and Bonnie Gull, where Carreira is currently executive chef.

Looking to build on their successful partnership, Claro is loosely based on a modern Portuguese taberna, serving small plates and wines by the glass. Traditional Portuguese dishes will sit alongside more progressive plates inspired by Carreira’s travels around the world as a chef.

Guests can expect a selection of meat, vegetable and seafood dishes, including Atlantic prawns with lardo and egg cake, cabbage with black garlic biscuit and mackerel with smoked seaweed butter. In addition, there will be special sando’s available to eat-in or take-away, including crab with tanuki and cinnamon bun.

The small wine list will change regularly, with a focus on organic wines, whilst diners can also pick from a short cocktail list or Portuguese beer on tap. Commenting on the menu, Carreira says “I’m very excited to cook food like this in a small, intimate environment, where the menu will be accessible for everyday dining.”

With a mix of counter-style seating and high tables, the 26-cover site features an open kitchen and snug bar tables. “Claro will have a relaxed and comfortable feel, but we expect it to buzz in the beating heart of Soho with exciting food, great wines and a killer soundtrack” adds Hunter.

Both Hunter and Carreira will continue their roles with The Sea, The Sea, with Hunter adding exciting things are planned for the Chelsea fish shop and seafood bar this year, including an expansion and development of the brand.

Clare will open in Spring at 22 Bateman St. Advanced bookings will shortly be available from the website here
