Jarvis and Rousset join forces at the Gunmakers, Marylebone

Published 21 October 2019

It’s a funny area is Marylebone. A wealthy enclave sandwiched between Baker Street and Oxford – the high street has turned from a villagey vibe, where you had everything you needed on one neat stretch of road, into a slightly soulless row of shops that you can find anywhere in London. Thank goodness for the likes of Daunt, La Fromagerie and Fischers that keep the independent trader flag flying proudly.

When it comes to restaurants, Marylebone is also a funny one. There’s Daylesford to keep the wealthy locals happy during the week and news is that Bill Grainger is soon to open an outpost of Granger’s on the high street. Chiltern Firehouse still attracts the celebs and when the sun is out that courtyard is hard to beat for a glass of rosé and people watching. We’re fans of Roganic for a celebratory meal, and you’ve got Trishna and Jikoni to keep your taste buds alive. Let’s also mot forget the Monocle café for the its prawn katsu and a decent stack of print media. However, we still feel the neighbourhood lacks a certain something.

This week’s news sees chef Mark Jarvis of Anglo fame team up with restaurateur Xavier Rousset (who owns Blandford Comptoir in the neighbourhood) take over the Gunmakers Arms behind the high street where the Sunday farmers market is held. The 40-cover restaurant is due to open next month highlighting the best of British produce and we’ve no doubt that Rousset will have the wine list covered. It’s also going to have six guest bedrooms too. A welcome addition to the area.
