The Dumbwaiter’s Best Bites of the Week – 26 April 2019

Published 26 April 2019

Bellamy’s

Tucked away on Bruton Place, Bellamy’s is a true old school classic (and the only restaurant the Queen dines at in London). Restaurateur Gavin Rankin’s previous work with Mark Birley is reflected in the decor and style of menu, with some proper classics including dover sole accompanied by a crisp Chablis.

Kebab Queen

Walking through a prep kitchen towards what appears to be a fridge door on the promise of a tasting menu of kebabs, one could be forgiven for wondering if this was all some kind of a joke. But what awaits is something a little bit special. Mini foie gras kebabs give way to risotto with all the flavours of a döner kebab. Dishes plated directly onto the 10-seater heated counter to be eaten by hand. Refined and messy in equal measure – what’s not to love?

34 Mayfair

34 was the first restaurant that Richard Caring officially opened as a restaurateur. The grill – housed around the corner from Scott’s – is reminiscent of somewhere you might find in the Hamptons with its pastel tones. Despite specialising in steak, The Dumbwaiter opted for fish with a starter of sashimi and a main of grilled tuna.

Poptata

The Dumbwaiter and Lazy Susan started the Bank Holiday in the only way they know how: at Poptata in Boxpark Shoreditch with their fully loaded street fries. The ‘chorifries’ came with crispy chorizo, melted goat’s cheese and smoky paprika and were just about as delicious as the pulled pork option, which came drenched in barbecue sauce.  Now with four permanent locations, The Dumbwaiter can get his fries fix wherever he wants.

Momo

Despite the drastic transformation of Heddon Street over the past few years, Momo has been going strong for twenty years. The North African restaurant by Mourad Mazouz was the place to be in the late nineties and has just reopened after a refurb. Over a bottle of Algerian red and some cous cous and chicken, The Dumbwaiter was intrigued to hear more about the plans for the new Momo diner that is opening next door.
