The Dumbwaiter’s Best Bites of the Week: 31 January 2020

Published 31 January 2020

From Spitalfields to Shoreditch. Here are The Dumbwaiter’s best bites of the week.

Honest Burgers

Veganuary might be drawing to an end, but we think the bacon plant special at Honest Burgers deserves a spot on the menu all year round. The special combines a plant-based burger patty with THIS Isn’t Bacon, vegan smoked gouda and shoestring fries , topped with chipotle mayo and bacon ketchup. Whatever your opinion is on plant-based meat alternatives, this is a burger even dedicated meat-eaters would have to admit through gritted teeth they enjoy. It’s only available until February 3, so go and try it before it’s too late- although The Dumbwaiter has a sneaky suspicion it might become a permanent fixture.

Bottles

The Dumbwaiter was in West London this week, to try the latest offering from Bottles – a cosy wine bar & restaurant which specialise in independent and organic micro producers, natural wines and regional Italian fare. The truffle gnocchi shouldn’t be missed!

Top Cuvee

Top Cuvee is at risk of overtaking The Drapers Arms as Lazy Susan’s most frequented neighbourhood restaurant. The hop up to Highbury is more than worthwhile for great service and interesting, frequently changing small plates from Brodie Meah and team. This week’s visit was a group affair, traversing the length of the menu from snacks of purple potatoes with anchovy dip to beef rump tartare and sea bass with puy lentils and puntarelle. But it’s the soda bread – this time topped with beautiful Brixham crab – that’s always the standout favourite and keeps Lazy Susan coming back time and again.

Passo

It’d be easy to stretch out in Passo’s spacious, LA inspired dining room and while away the evening nursing a few of their signature negronis, but it’d be foolish not to order some food, too. Go for, at least, the doppio raviolo with confit rabbit, and, at best, the burratina, a bowl of their homemade gnocchi with pistachio pesto and a dulce de leche affogato to finish – for good measure.

Lost Boys Pizza, Camden

Lost Boys Pizza (inspired by the 1987 cult classic The Lost Boys), have been running their High Priestess vegan menu at their neighbourhood pizzeria in Camden this January. Expect charcoal-based pizza dough, with customisable pizzas and sides, along with a great selection of CBD infused cocktails washed down with an epic playlist of 80s classics. Don’t miss the absinthe bar downstairs ..

Ottolenghi Spitalfields

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Liverpool Street station, Ottolenghi Spitalfields is the perfect spot for the salads, pastries and sweet treats you would expect from any Ottolenghi location. This week, The Dumbwaiter stopped by for breakfast. Whilst every dish on the menu looked appealing, it was to be the Dutch baby pancake with navel orange, caramel and macadamia this time around- a great way to start the day.

Foley’s

The Dumbwaiter & Co popped over to Foley’s for some much needed Asian soul food to chase away the January blues. Make sure to order the mushroom buns and rock shrimp tempura, and the spicy brisket curry will certainly help clear your sinuses. Finishing the meal with some mango sticky rice also comes highly recommended.
