Corn tortellini, Spring

Slow braised lamb with plum, Honey & Smoke

Biang biang noodles, Murger Han

Chickpea panisse, Folie

From London Bridge to Lancaster Place. Here are the best things the CODE team ate this week.

Tavolino

Tavolino, with its sweeping views of Tower Bridge is an authentic taste of Italy headed up by Louis Korovilas (formerly of Bancone). The unpretentious menu focuses on locally sourced produce and relies on their own trusted producers and contains big hitters such as burrata, fig and hazelnut, some silky handkerchiefs of pasta with walnut butter and a rich and satisfying cacio e pepe. For dessert we had the lemon meringue and a light and flavourful tiramisu. Our lunch was complimented by the carefully curated wine list and punchy cocktail menu.

Corn tortellini, Spring

Spring

I forgot just what a beautiful dining room Spring is and it was so lovely to see if back to action this week when I visited for dinner. Skye Gyngell’s food remains as clean and vibrant as ever working with quality produce. The corn tortellini was one of those dishes you’d alone come back for and it was beautifully paired with a glass of natural Gewürztraminer.

Slow braised lamb with plum, Honey & Smoke

Honey & Smoke

One place I need little excuse to return to is Honey & Smoke. But they also do very clever, themed nights on Mondays. During the summer it was based on holidays, for the autumn they have a Halloween special planned but I went to the Jewish New Year feast The other night. Amazing slow braised lamb with plums was a rich, opulent dish, and then to follow, just in case that wasn’t enough, we’re amazing honey parfait sandwiches. Itamar and Sarit sure know how to do feel good food, thank goodness.

Biang biang noodles, Murger Han

Murger Han

New(ish) to Philpot Street, just behind Monument Station, sits Murger Han’s latest site serving all of the authentic Xi’an dishes we have become accustomed to since it first opened. Expect big steaming dishes of hand pulled BiangBiang noodles, I had mine with spicy braised pork, tomato, egg sauce and chilli oil, tripe skewers for the brave and deliciously refreshing seaweed salads. They have also just launched a £10 menu for the now new-normal early supper and a quick lunch, an offer I find hard to refuse. Murger Han is also the only restaurant in Europe that serves traditional drinks from Xi’an City such as Ice Peak Orange Soda, when you do go please try one – I did and was not disappointed!

Chickpea panisse, Folie

Folie

This restaurant on Golden Square in Soho has been open for over a year but thanks to lockdown it’s taken me that long to actually visit it. Stunning interiors from the same design studio as Chiltern Firehouse set the scene for dinner here. After a vodka martini (organic vodka) and some of their moorish chickpea panisse, starters of tuna sashimi and a burrata were followed by rigatoni all’arrabiata and a wagyu burger with comté.
